Autumn equinox

Falls seems too gentle and inadequate this year
For it merely hints of the
Wind, the cold and the drastic beauty to come.
Winter will be upon us suddenly one morning
Its unrelenting hand slapping across our faces
As we lay together, unprepared
Still warm from autumn’s breathe
Our minds still convinced it is summer.
Surprised at this bitter reminder,
we take up winter’s work
Preparing hearts and minds
Knowing the warmth of friendship will
Insulate us from its loneliness.
Until we find that accepting has been half the battle.
